Discover the story behind this artwork
This anonymous British Second World War poster carries the slogan “Women of the Allies… Fight for Freedom”. Four photographs show a uniformed woman throwing a grenade, a nurse examining equipment, a factory worker handling a mechanical component and three women servicing an aircraft engine.
A vertical row of twelve Allied national flags runs down the left side, while the headline and closing appeal appear in large blue letters. The Smithsonian catalogues this English-language version among British posters from 1939–1945 and gives an approximate size of 51 × 38 cm. The words “Printed in England” are visible at the bottom of the image, and the artist remains unidentified.
