Discover the story behind this artwork
This red “Deep Space Atomic Clock” poster is one of three designs released by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory on June 19, 2019 to introduce the spaceborne atomic clock. The official credit is NASA/JPL-Caltech. This product is a reproduction of that contemporary poster, not a vintage poster from 2017.
The composition turns space into a clock face: the 12, 3 and 9 markers surround an astronaut silhouette, orbital paths and spacecraft in a midnight-blue, red and cream palette. Its original line reads “Better clocks. Better navigation. Better science.” Launched into Earth orbit on June 25, 2019, the Deep Space Atomic Clock mission tested a mercury-ion clock designed to help future spacecraft navigate more autonomously.
