Robert Polhill Bevan, master of post-impressionism
Robert Polhill Bevan's art is part of the post-impressionist movement where color and structure take precedence over strict naturalistic rendering. Influenced by English landscapes and European stays, Bevan mastered synthesizing observation and formal simplification to create images that are both decorative and expressive. Known for his pastoral scenes and studies of rural life, he here presents a personal vision of the landscape, close to the sensibility of late 19th-century painters. The art print The Turning of the Rice Plow, Sussex demonstrates his mastery of pictorial rhythm and a brushstroke that emphasizes visual relief as much as the truth of the subject.
