About the Woodland Grayling

Paul-André Robert published Les papillons dans la nature in Neuchâtel in 1934 with Delachaux and Niestlé. The book contains 64 colour plates and monographs. This illustration is plate 27, devoted to the Woodland Grayling, now classified as Hipparchia fagi, a butterfly in the Nymphalidae family.

Three views on oak bark

Robert arranges three butterflies around the trunk and branches of an English oak (Quercus robur). Two display dark brown upperwings crossed by broad pale bands and marked with eyespots. The central specimen rests with closed wings, revealing a marbled underside that blends into the bark, lichen and greenish shadows.

A natural history plate from 1934

The original caption identifies a female in flight at natural size, a female enlarged twofold and lying sideways against the bark, and a male in flight at natural size. The composition combines scientific observation with a precisely rendered plant setting.
