About the Large Tortoiseshell
Paul-André Robert published Les papillons dans la nature in Neuchâtel in 1934 with Delachaux and Niestlé. This illustration is plate 15 from the book and depicts the Large Tortoiseshell, a butterfly now classified as Nymphalis polychloros in the Nymphalidae family.
Two sides of the same butterfly
At the top, open wings reveal an orange ground marked with black spots, dark borders and small blue crescents. In the foreground, closed wings show a finely marbled brown underside that camouflages the butterfly against the stone. The scalloped wing edges visually connect the two views.
Stonecrops and natural history observation
The original caption describes two males: one feeding at natural size and another, enlarged twofold, resting on a stone. Robert places them among biting stonecrop (Sedum acre) and white stonecrop (Sedum album). The book’s older name Vanessa polychloros is now a synonym of Nymphalis polychloros.
