Where the right of withdrawal applies, contact us within 14 days of delivery. Return shipping is paid by the customer and the item must be sent to the European address provided by our customer service team. Damaged, defective or incorrect items are handled at our expense.

About The Crucifixion

Pedro Orrente painted The Crucifixion around 1625-30. This 123.8 × 102.9 cm oil on canvas, object number 2014.228, belongs to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and is displayed in its European Paintings galleries.

Calvary filled with narrative detail

Christ occupies the central cross between the two thieves bound to tree trunks. Around them, a ladder, attendants, soldiers, mourning figures and a dog in the foreground create multiple points of focus. The clouded sky and the red, blue and white clothing organise the dramatic scene.

The gesture of the sponge

The museum highlights one precise detail: the man on the ladder responds to Christ’s cry of thirst. Using a cane, he retrieves a wet sponge from a bystander before holding it to Christ’s lips. Orrente thus combines the sacred episode with tangible gestures in a composition full of movement.
