Discover the story behind this artwork
This British Second World War poster was produced between 1939 and 1945. The artist is not identified in the catalogues consulted. It was printed in London by J. Weiner Ltd for H.M. Stationery Office and belongs to campaigns warning about the consequences of indiscreet conversation.
Four scenes alternate against red and cream backgrounds. A sailor wearing an “HMS” cap speaks to a blonde woman. She passes the information to a red-haired woman, who repeats it to a dark-haired woman. The final panel pairs that woman with a man representing the enemy. The slogan runs across all four sections: “Telling a friend may mean telling the enemy”. This naval version uses black and white lettering integrated with the portraits.
