Bonaparte Before the Sphinx, painted between 1867 and 1886 by Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904), sets General Bonaparte on horseback before the Great Sphinx of Giza. The army appears in the distant desert, while the framing omits the pyramids to concentrate the composition on the encounter between the figure and the ancient monument.
The scene refers to the Egyptian campaign and troop movements before the battle of 21 July 1798 against the Mamluks of Murad Bey. Gérôme, who travelled to Egypt several times from 1855 onward, exhibited the canvas at the 1886 Salon under the title Oedipus, linking Bonaparte with the hero facing the Sphinx.
