About the Self-Portrait with His Father
Julius Henricus Quinkhard (1734–1795) painted this self-portrait in 1757. The Rijksmuseum identifies the man standing behind him as his father and teacher, Jan Maurits Quinkhard (1688–1772). This oil on canvas measures 100 × 84 cm and is numbered SK-A-324.
The seated painter and his teacher
The young artist, wearing a red cap and grey coat, is shown half-length at a table. He leafs through a large open book and holds a sheet in his left hand, cautiously described by the museum as possibly a drawing. His father stands behind him in a red robe and grey wig.
Books, papers and signature
Stacks of books emerge from the shadows behind a green curtain. A large rolled sheet rests on the right side of the table. The signature and date appear at the lower centre: “Julius Quinkhard pinx 1757”. The dates 1688–1772 belong to the father, not to the artist who painted the self-portrait.
