Gartside’s text advises contrasting bright scarlet with very deep green, then connecting those extremes through red, orange and touches of blue, yellow and violet. Soft edges let the colours merge without linear drawing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eColour as the subject\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGartside conceived her “blots” as groups of colour that could guide compositions of flowers, landscapes or figures.
