About Saint Bartholomew Exorcising

Saint Bartholomew Exorcising, painted around 1440–1460 by the Master of Saint Bartholomew, is a Gothic panel held by the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) in Barcelona as accession 200706-000. Made in tempera on wood with gold details, it measures 81 × 68 cm.

An exorcism scene

Haloed and dressed in a richly patterned cloak, Saint Bartholomew stands before two kneeling men. His gesture directs attention towards the possessed figure, while a small demonic creature makes the exorcism visible. The tightly grouped figures, expressive gestures and strong colours give the scene vivid narrative force.

A Gothic altarpiece panel

The MNAC identifies the painting as one compartment of an altarpiece devoted to Saint Bartholomew. The museum holds another panel from the same ensemble, while four more belong to the Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao. The altarpiece’s original provenance is unknown.
