Luigi Mayer, master of the traveler’s landscape
Luigi Mayer, an 18th-century painter and topographer, is renowned for his documentary and romantic views of the Near East, derived from travels and meticulous observations. Influenced by the spirit of curiosity cabinets and the vogue of the Grand Tour, Mayer combined science and pictorial sensitivity, producing valuable works for the history of visual archaeology.
