Riders Crossing the Desert is an oil on panel painted by Jean-Léon Gérôme in 1870. Signed at the lower left, the work measures 41 × 56 cm. In the intense Egyptian sunlight, a group of riders advances before barren hills while travellers and a camel appear in the distance.
The frieze-like composition stresses the group’s progress and gives depth to the caravan. Gérôme drew on his journeys into the Egyptian desert in 1856 and the Sinai in 1868, as well as sketches and photographs brought back from those expeditions. Goupil & Co. published the work as a photogravure in 1878.
This reproduction preserves the contrast between the precisely rendered foreground riders and the luminous expanse of desert. Discover more works by Jean-Léon Gérôme in our collection.
