Art print — The Fall of Icarus (1943) — Henri Matisse

The Fall of Icarus (1943) by Henri Matisse is a 36 × 26.5 cm composition made from gouache-painted papers that were cut and pinned. Its falling white figure, red circle, yellow shapes and blue bands create a sombre mood associated with the wartime context. It is distinct from Icarus, plate VIII from Jazz, published in 1947, which shows a black silhouette against a blue background.

In the artistic context of the time, Matisse turned away from traditional painting to explore new forms of expression through cut-outs. This technique allowed him to capture the essence of movement and freedom, symbolizing his relentless quest for artistic renewal. All works by Henri Matisse demonstrate this evolution toward bolder abstraction and an innovative use of color and form.
