About the portrait of Jean Charles Garnier d’Isle
This portrait of Jean Charles Garnier d’Isle (1697–1755), made by Maurice Quentin de La Tour around 1750, is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art as accession 2002.439. It is pastel and gouache on blue paper laid down on canvas and measures 64.5 × 54 cm.
A portrait in pastel
Garnier d’Isle is shown half-length, turned three-quarters to the left and looking towards the viewer. His powdered hair, blue-grey coat with silver ornament and white lace stand out against a subtly varied brown background. Pastel precisely models the face, fabrics and metallic highlights.
Architect and garden designer
The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes Garnier d’Isle as an architect and garden designer associated with the remodelling of several properties belonging to Madame de Pompadour, including Bellevue. Appointed comptroller of the Luxembourg and Tuileries palaces in 1748, he commissioned a portrait from La Tour that was exhibited at the 1751 Salon.
