About Francis Asbury
John Paradise painted this portrait of Francis Asbury in 1813. The oil on canvas measures 76.2 × 61 cm and belongs to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery, where it is catalogued as NPG.90.82.
The sitter and his attributes
Francis Asbury (1745–1816), a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, is shown half-length against a brown background. White hair frames his face; he wears a black coat and white neckcloth. His right hand holds a small open book identified by the museum as a Bible.
John Paradise
John Paradise (1783–1833) was an American portrait painter. Here, the three-quarter pose, restrained background and contrast between the dark clothing, white neckcloth and face focus attention on the sitter.
