Bashi-Bazouk, painted in 1868–69 by Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904), portrays a man in profile wearing a pink silk tunic and a tall headdress assembled from colourful textiles. A rifle rises behind his shoulder. Precise lighting brings out the fabrics, tassels and accessories against a dark background.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art explains that Gérôme painted the portrait in Paris after a twelve-week journey through the Near East early in 1868. The model posed in the studio wearing garments and accessories the artist had acquired abroad. The title refers to irregular auxiliary soldiers serving under Ottoman command.
