About Napoleon’s Army Crossing the Somosierra Pass
This military scene by Paul-Émile-Léon Perboyre shows a column of cavalrymen and soldiers advancing through a snow-covered mountain landscape. Born in 1851, the painter looked back on the Peninsular campaign retrospectively: the work itself was not painted in 1808, contrary to the previous description.
The subject refers to the passage through Somosierra in the Sierra de Guadarrama on 30 November 1808. Napoleon’s forces opened the road to Madrid after confronting the Spanish defences. The composition focuses on the column’s arduous progress, the horses and the wintry atmosphere rather than on the clash of battle.
Perboyre specialised in military scenes and devoted many compositions to the Napoleonic campaigns. Here, the figures, uniforms and movement of the convoy create an image that is both narrative and panoramic.
