About the Portrait of Melania Sobańska

Marcin Jabłoński painted this portrait in 1832. The oil on lined canvas measures 62.5 × 48 cm and belongs to the National Museum in Warsaw, where it is recorded under inventory number MP 4234 MNW.

An elaborately dressed sitter

Melania Sobańska is shown half-length, turned three-quarters to the right and looking at the viewer. A white tulle bonnet decorated with flowers and ribbons frames her brown curls. Her black dress with white lace is complemented by strands of pearls, earrings and a gold brooch. The dark background brings the face and costume details forward.

Identity and signature

The museum’s official title identifies the sitter as Melania z Uruskich Sobańska (1813–1887), or Melania Sobańska, née Uruska. A partly legible signature and the date 1832 appear at lower right; a transferred inscription on the reverse reads “Jabłoński pinxit 1832”.
