About the Portrait of Ann Anderson as Flora
In this eighteenth-century portrait, Nathaniel Hone the Elder depicts Ann Anderson, wife of Alexander Balmanno, as Flora, the Roman goddess of spring. The work is an oil painting on canvas measuring 61.5 × 51 cm.
A floral image of Flora
Ann Anderson wears a rose-coloured dress edged with white at the neckline and sleeves. She holds a garland of flowers against a dark background enlivened by foliage. Light is concentrated on her face, arm and the flowers, while the diagonal position of her hands connects the figure to the bouquet.
Nathaniel Hone and allegorical portraiture
Born in Dublin in 1718 and settled in London by 1748, Nathaniel Hone worked as a portrait painter, miniaturist and enamellist before becoming a founding member of the Royal Academy. He combined a recognisable likeness with elements of genre painting. Here, Ann Anderson’s identity is joined to the allegorical role of Flora.
