Portrait of a Seated Man (Portrait of Dr Sürger) – Július Andorko

A seated man in a dark jacket looks straight ahead. His moustache, round glasses and broad-brimmed hat define the face, while one arm rests on the back of the chair. The pink and brown background is deliberately spare.

Július Andorko painted this portrait in 1907. The name “Andorko” and the date appear at lower right. The museum record identifies the sitter as Dr Sürger and classifies the work as a portrait.

The Slovak title Portrét sediaceho muža means “Portrait of a Seated Man”: the corrupted word “mua” came from muža, meaning “man”. This oil on canvas is held by the East Slovak Gallery under inventory number O 1998.
