A still life by Martinus Nellius

Orange in a Porcelain Bowl and Hazelnuts on a Ledge is an oil on oak panel by Martinus Nellius. Signed at lower right, this small panel measures 20 × 16.5 cm. It was presented as a pair with A Roemer, Lemon and Almanac Page on a Ledge.

Orange, porcelain and hazelnuts

An opened orange rests in a blue-and-white porcelain bowl in front of a tall glass. Hazelnuts and a leafy branch bearing small fruit animate the ledge. At upper right, a white butterfly stands out against the dark background.

A precise, luminous composition

Reflections on the glass and porcelain echo the glistening orange flesh. The close framing, delicate details and contrast with the background give this miniature still life a striking presence. Nellius, active in The Hague from 1676 to 1719, was known for small compositions of fruit, flowers and glassware.
