Discover the story behind this artwork
This anonymous British industrial poster from the Second World War carries the message “No T.N.T. Without Sulphuric Acid”. In the upper section, an explosion rises from the sea beside a sharply listing vessel. Black and grey drawing and large red lettering dominate this part of the composition.
The lower section, set against yellow, shows a tank wagon marked “Imperial Smelting Corporation Ltd”. The poster refers to the use of nitric and sulphuric acids to nitrate toluene during the manufacture of trinitrotoluene. A copy is referenced in the collections of the United States National Archives. Without a more detailed catalogue record, the artist, printer and exact year remain unidentified.
