About Ipswich, Marshes

Painted around 1900, Ipswich, Marshes is an oil on canvas by Theodore Wendel. It depicts the wetlands of Ipswich, Massachusetts, where the artist settled at the end of the nineteenth century.

Trees between sky and marsh

A group of tall, slender trees fills the foreground. Their pale foliage stands against an expansive blue sky, while water and marshland appear between the trunks. Two small seated figures add a discreet human presence.

The light of American Impressionism

Visible brushstrokes and a palette of blues, greens and ochres convey the changing light rather than recording the site in minute detail. Signed at lower right, the painting belongs to the Ipswich period that defines Wendel’s mature Impressionist work.
