The East Himalayan fir in Iconographie des conifères
Plate XXI depicts Abies webbiana Lindley, known as the East Himalayan fir. It belongs to Léon Gabriel Charles Pardé’s Iconographie des conifères fructifiant en France, published in Paris between 1912 and 1914 by the Librairie des sciences naturelles, Paul Klincksieck and Léon Lhomme.
A monumental cone surrounded by botanical details
A dark, elongated cone dominates the composition. Around it, blue-green needled shoots show buds, flowers and cones at different stages. The fifteen numbered figures also include scales, seeds, individual needles, sections and fragments of bark and wood.
A scientific plate painted from nature
The book’s colour plates were painted from nature by Mme Guillo-Kastner and then lithographed. Against the cream paper, greens, browns and blue-grey tones distinguish each botanical feature with precision. The Latin name, plate number XXI and publisher’s imprint remain visible in the margins.
