Created in 1859, this canvas transports the viewer to the heart of the Roman Empire, capturing the poignant moment when gladiators salute the emperor before entering battle in the arena. Gérôme, a master of detail and composition, offers us here a dramatic scene filled with tension and reflection on the human condition.
