About the portrait of Gunnar Heiberg
Oda Krohg painted this portrait of the Norwegian writer and playwright Gunnar Heiberg in 1900. The work is held by Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, which acquired it in 1904. It opens a series of portraits Krohg devoted to artists and cultural figures in her circle.
A concentrated presence
Heiberg is shown seated in a dark suit in a half-length pose. His round glasses, moustache, direct gaze and hand resting near his waist define the composition. The face and hand, lit in warm tones, stand out against a softly modulated green-brown background.
Oda Krohg as a portrait painter
Oda Krohg (1860–1935) was a notable figure in Norwegian painting. In her early twentieth-century portraits, broad brushwork and strong contrasts of light are combined with close attention to the sitter’s psychological presence.
