Frigate approaching the mouth of the Tagus with a steamboat passing the Belém Tower in Lisbon: An invitation to emotion
The maritime scene unfolds like a story told by the breath of the wind: sails taut, steam smoke drawing ephemeral clouds, and the monumental silhouette of the Belém Tower in the background. The art print of the Frigate approaching the mouth of the Tagus captures the tension between the calm of the sea and the movement of vessels. The colors oscillate between deep blues, atmospheric grays, and touches of ochre warming the horizon; the technique highlights delicate realism, made of precise brushstrokes and modulated light. The eye naturally glides from the main mast to the reflection on the water, offering an emotion that is both contemplative and vibrant.
James Edward Buttersworth, master of marine painting
British painter of the 19th century renowned for his naval scenes, James Edward Buttersworth mastered immortalizing maritime life with rare precision and sensitivity. Influenced by the traditions of realism and maritime romanticism, he painted regattas, warships, and coasts with remarkable mastery of perspective and light. This work is part of his production where exact observation of details coexists with a narrative staging; think of his other famous compositions, where every sail and every water reflection tells a story. Whether it's the Frigate approaching the mouth of the Tagus with a steamboat passing the Belém Tower in Lisbon or his studies of hulls, the quality remains consistent.
