About Woodland Scene with Roe Deer

Luitpold Faustner painted this work in 1878. Dorotheum catalogued it under the German title Waldstück mit Rehwild. The 79 × 58 cm oil on canvas is signed and dated “L. Faustner” in ligature.

Two roe deer in a clearing

Two roe deer stand at the foot of large trees, just left of centre. A small wooden shelter is attached to the main trunk. Light passes through the foliage and falls across the bark, moss-covered roots and brown forest floor, while the edges of the woodland remain darker.

A composition shaped by light

The vertical trunks organise the depth and guide the eye towards the animals. The contrast between the illuminated centre and dense vegetation makes the roe deer visible without separating them from their habitat. The date, medium, dimensions and signature are documented in the 18 September 2019 sale catalogue.
