About Ferdinand and Miranda from The Tempest

Made in 1852, this work by Henry Anelay depicts Ferdinand and Miranda, the young lovers in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. It is a watercolour and gouache over pencil and ink on paper.

A meeting in a leafy setting

Ferdinand and Miranda stand together in a rocky passage covered with ivy, ferns and flowers. Ferdinand’s dark purple costume contrasts with Miranda’s pale dress. Their close hands and Miranda’s face turned towards him focus attention on their relationship.

Henry Anelay, English painter and draughtsman

Henry Anelay (1817–1883) is documented as an English painter and draughtsman. His work included portraiture, drawing and printed illustration. Here, the careful costumes, plants and rocks serve a literary subject without literally depicting the storm named in the play’s title.
