Fantasia by Ulpiano Checa
A rider dressed in white charges forward on a black horse, holding a long rifle. Two more riders appear in the background between a pale track and ochre walls. The blue sky, white clothing and dark mass of the horse heighten the scene’s sense of speed.
What the title Fantasia means
Here, “fantasia” does not mean a fantasy scene. It refers to a North African equestrian display modelled on a military charge. Ulpiano Checa, a Spanish painter born in 1860 and deceased in 1916, repeatedly explored horses and movement.
