Concepts for a banknote watermark: Pegasus, dove, woman's head, coat of arms, and hand with rose: An invitation to emotion
The art print of the Concepts for a banknote watermark: Pegasus, dove, woman's head, coat of arms, and hand with rose reveals a bustling composition where symbols and graphic delicacy intertwine. The work features a series of elements — winged Pegasus, peaceful dove, female profile, simple coat of arms, and a hand holding a rose — arranged with precision that evokes both the preparatory drawing and the sophistication of a watermark. The colors, muted and nuanced, play with gray, ochre, and pastel tones that lend the scene a restrained poetry; the touch, fine and veined, suggests drawing and engraving techniques. An atmosphere that is both archaic and modern is felt, where each motif invites the eye and contemplation.
Leo Gestel, master of early 20th-century modernism
Leo Gestel, a prominent figure of the Dutch avant-garde, skillfully combined cubist, fauvist, and expressionist influences to develop a unique visual language. Active mainly in the early 20th century, he belonged to the modernist movement that revitalized painting in the Netherlands; his works range between landscapes, portraits, and symbolic compositions. Inspired by travels and exchanges with European artists, Gestel explored the simplification of forms and chromatic harmony, qualities visible in this drawing designed for a watermark. This art print highlights his sense of balance, his graphic rigor, and the refined modernity that characterize many of Leo Gestel's paintings.
