Reproduction of the painting Children Reading - Édouard Vuillard

This reproduction of Children Reading by Édouard Vuillard presents an oil painting on cardboard dated 1906, held by the MuMa in Le Havre. The sitters are Jacques and Annette Roussel, the painter’s nephew and niece. The horizontal format draws the scene closely around their faces, hands and open book.

On the left, Jacques is seen from the side and behind, resting his head on his hand. His white collar stands out against his orange-red clothing. On the right, Annette leans over the pages. Light from the window illuminates her face and hand, while the background remains brown and dark.

Touches of white, purple, green and violet-blue concentrate around the children and the book. The brown cardboard remains visible between painted passages. These separate touches bring the figures into relation with their surroundings and place the act of reading at the centre, without detailing the entire room.
