Cottage and calf — Raymond McIntyre This watercolour on paper by Raymond McIntyre is held by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa under registration number 1968-0002-7. Made in England, the image measures 28.7 × 23.8 cm. It entered the collection in 1968 as a gift from the estate of C. Millan Thompson. A pale cottage with a red roof stands behind a bank between slender tree trunks. On the right, a calf lowers its head to graze. Transparent washes of violet, ochre, blue and green are structured by quick dark contours. The broad area of grass in the foreground and the branches crossing the sky give movement to this small rural scene. Raymond Francis McIntyre (1879–1933), a New Zealand painter and art critic born in Christchurch, settled in England in 1909. The work’s economy of means — a few supple lines and light areas of colour — vividly conveys the cottage, vegetation and animal.
