About Carnglaze Street
Carnglaze Street is a watercolour painted by Owen Merton in 1910 and held by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Merton was then staying in St Ives, Cornwall, where he worked from mid-March until late June 1910.
A narrow street in St Ives
The composition follows a paved alley enclosed by closely spaced houses. Weatherboarding, irregular walls, chimneys, steps and a large lantern mark the perspective. On the right, a woman bends over a tub beside hanging laundry. Pencil lines remain visible beneath washes of ochre, blue, grey and green.
Owen Merton in Cornwall
Born in Christchurch in 1887 and deceased in London in 1931, Owen Merton is particularly associated with watercolour. Here, the drawn line defines the architecture while transparent washes describe the street’s light and surfaces.
