Brandenburg Gate, painted in 1929 by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938), is a city view of Berlin. The gate and its quadriga dominate a composition animated by vehicles, groups of people, trees and the area around Pariser Platz.
The Städel Museum’s digital collection classifies the work as Expressionist and records the signature and date “E L. Kirchner 29” along the lower edge. This oil on canvas has been held by the museum as a permanent loan from SEB, Frankfurt am Main, since 1977.
