Allegory of Satan (Lord of the World), c. 1900
Painted around 1900 by Ludwik Stasiak, Allegory of Satan (Lord of the World) is an oil on canvas measuring 200 × 145 cm. The work belongs to the National Museum in Kraków, where it is recorded under inventory number MNK II-b-3252.
An allegory of earthly power
A smiling man in red, with bat-like wings, sits frontally on a throne. He holds a sceptre topped by a head recalling Stańczyk. Peacock feathers decorate the throne, while skulls, helmets and coins gather at his feet. The composition thus brings together signs of power, wealth, war and death without imposing a single interpretation.
Ludwik Stasiak, Polish painter and writer
Born in Bochnia in 1858 and deceased there in 1924, Ludwik Stasiak was a painter, draughtsman, writer, journalist and art historian. He studied at the Kraków School of Fine Arts under several masters, including Jan Matejko, and worked across genre painting, history, portraiture and allegory.
