About A Woman Playing the Theorbo-Lute and a Cavalier

Painted around 1658, this small work by Gerard ter Borch is held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as object 14.40.617. The oil on wood measures 36.8 × 32.4 cm.

Music and courtship

A young woman dressed in blue plucks a theorbo-lute while her suitor leans towards her. The Met describes them as playing a duet. A songbook, a common lovers’ gift at the time, lies open on the carpet-covered table.

Time on the table

A watch sits beside the songbook. According to The Met, it may symbolize temperance or the fleeting nature of the affair. The painting entered the museum in 1913 through the bequest of Benjamin Altman.
