A Hearty Welcoming – Helena J. Maguire

In the entrance hall of a house, a young girl stands between two large Saint Bernards. She rests one hand on the head of a dog while a small kitten crosses the tiled floor. Through the open doorway, a horse-drawn carriage, several figures and luggage appear in bright daylight.

British artist Helena J. Maguire (1860–1909) executed this scene in watercolour. The work measures 66 × 55 cm and is signed at the lower left. Its recorded title is “A Hearty Welcoming”.

The composition contrasts the shaded interior with the luminous outdoors. The dogs fill almost the entire width of the foreground, while the girl, the kitten and the arrival framed by the doorway lead the eye into the scene.
