This delicate watercolor created by Isaac Israëls (1865-1934) offers an intimate glimpse into daily life in Amsterdam at the end of the 19th century. The work features a man sitting on a bench, surrounded by three young girls, in the lush setting of Oosterpark. The softness of the watercolored hues and the light touches characteristic of Israëls give the scene a spontaneous and natural appearance.
The outfits of the protagonists, particularly the girls' straw hats and the man's understated suit, reflect the simple elegance of that era. The background, blurred yet suggestive, with trees and iconic buildings of Amsterdam, enhances the serene and familial atmosphere of the composition.
The work illustrates Israëls' talent for capturing the present moment, combining a bright palette and an impressionist approach in the rendering of figures and landscape.
