Martinus Rørbye, master of social landscape and travel
Martinus Rørbye belongs to Denmark's golden age of the 19th century, known for his genre scenes and landscapes inspired by his travels in the Mediterranean and the Orient. Influenced by Nordic realism and an interest in foreign cultures, Rørbye skillfully captures everyday gestures and the specific light of each place. Among his famous works are romantic views of Copenhagen and studies of rural and urban life. This art print of a chess game in front of a Turkish coffee shop and a hair salon illustrates his talent for telling a scene without artifice and for making palpable the suspended time of a shared moment.
