Art prints of paintings – Copenhagen
Explore our collection of art prints inspired by Copenhagen, Denmark's artistic capital. These works capture the soft light and Nordic serenity, perfect for elegant and soothing decor.
Discover the art reproductions of Copenhagen through its squares, harbours, canals, palaces, markets, parks and interiors. From C.W. Eckersberg and Christen Købke to Vilhelm Hammershøi and Paul Fischer, the collection spans several generations of artists who observed the Danish capital, its light and everyday life.
Copenhagen in Danish painting
The Statens Museum for Kunst places the “Golden Age” of Danish painting between approximately 1800 and 1850. The institution links this period to C.W. Eckersberg’s teaching at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and names Christen Købke, Martinus Rørbye, Wilhelm Bendz and Constantin Hansen among his pupils. Several of these artists are brought together here around urban views, landscapes near the city and interior scenes.
The catalogue nevertheless extends beyond this period: Paul Fischer depicts the bustle of streets and markets, while Vilhelm Hammershøi transforms apartments, churches, quays and squares into quiet compositions with restrained tones.
Squares, markets and everyday life
Kongens Nytorv, Gammel Strand, Amager, Trianglen and Queen Louise’s Bridge appear across different seasons. Paul Fischer’s works show shoppers, flower sellers, fishwives and urban traffic. These subjects make it possible to create a collection centred on the lived city rather than solely on its monuments.
Repeated locations are useful for comparing winter and summer, morning and evening, crowds and calm. Some records have similar titles or titles translated differently: they remain separate in the catalogue until a dedicated visual check has confirmed that they depict the same image.
Harbours, canals and the maritime horizon
Copenhagen is also depicted from Christianshavn, Nyhavn, Langelinie, Nordhavnen, Trekroner and the Øresund. Ships, docks, royal shipyards, canals and quays structure the views. Johan Christian Dahl’s moonlit scenes and the maritime views of Eckersberg and Carl Frederik Sørensen offer a calmer counterpoint to the market scenes.
Palaces, churches and fortifications
Christiansborg, Rosenborg, Amalienborg, St Peter’s Church, Kastellet and the citadel give the collection an architectural perspective. Several paintings also depict the city’s artistic institutions: the Academy, the Thorvaldsen Museum, the Royal Collection and Charlottenborg Palace.
Vilhelm Hammershøi: rooms, doors and light
The SMK notes that Hammershøi is particularly known for his interiors and often painted the rooms of his homes in Copenhagen. In Interior with the Artist’s Easel, the institution highlights the structure formed by horizontal and vertical lines, doors, windows and furniture, as well as the variations of grey and white produced by soft light.
The collection makes it possible to compare his interiors in Strandgade and Bredgade with exterior views: St Peter’s Church, Christiansborg, Amalienborg, Christianshavn, Gentofte and Jægersborg Park.
Parks, lakes and the capital’s surroundings
Dosseringen, Sortedam Lake, Østerbro, Nørrebro, Utterslev, Gentofte, Sorgenfri and Jægersborg broaden the view beyond the city centre. These landscapes show the city’s outskirts, promenades, gardens, deer parks and changing seasons.
