This collection brings together reproductions of paintings and graphic works by Hans Thoma (1839–1924), a German painter born in Bernau in the Black Forest. Landscapes, rural life, portraits, biblical narratives, mythology and allegories trace a body of work that developed from realism towards more symbolic compositions.

Bernau and the Landscapes of the Black Forest

Thoma grew up in modest circumstances in Bernau. The Kunsthalle Karlsruhe emphasises the lasting importance of his home region and his observation of nature. Summer Morning in the Bernau Valley, Black Forest Landscape and Waterfall near St Blasien combine terrain, water, meadows and forests.

These works are not merely descriptive. Paths, trees and horizons organise the space and sometimes give the landscape a meditative or spiritual dimension.

Realism, Rural Life and Family Scenes

Thoma’s early realist paintings and genre scenes contributed to his recognition. Young Peasant in a Wheat Field, Feeding the Hens and The Brothers and Sisters show work, childhood and domestic life without separating them from their everyday setting.

Italy, Travels and Other Landscapes

After studying in Karlsruhe and spending time in Paris, Thoma lived in Munich and later Frankfurt. His travels took him to Italy, among other places. Olive Grove on Lake Garda and Near Lerici in the Gulf of La Spezia shift his exploration towards Mediterranean light and vegetation. The Metropolitan Museum also preserves a view of Lake Garda dated 1907.

Mythology, Religion and the Symbolic World

The collection includes fauns, deities, angels and biblical episodes. Apollo and Marsyas belongs to the mythological tradition, while The Flight into Egypt and Easter Triptych — Resurrection of Christ belong to Christian iconography.

These images often combine simple forms, familiar landscapes and spiritual or folkloric references. This explains why Thoma is variously associated with realism, late Romanticism and Symbolism, although no single label encompasses his entire career.

Portraits, Self-Portraits and Inner Circle

Cella Thoma, his wife and an artist in her own right, played an important role in his life and regularly sat for him. Portrait of Madame Cella Thoma can be viewed alongside Self-Portrait with Cupid and Death, in which the artist depicts himself in an allegorical composition.

Public Success and Historical Context

After breaking through at a Munich exhibition in 1890, Thoma became highly popular. He directed the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe from 1899 to 1919 and taught at the academy. This recognition should not obscure a context now examined by the museum: from the 1880s onwards, he also maintained ties with « völkisch » nationalist circles. The Kunsthalle describes his political positions as ambivalent and still debated.

This information places his fame within the Germany of his time without reducing his landscapes or portraits to a single political interpretation.

Choosing a Reproduction by Hans Thoma

Black Forest panoramas suit horizontal formats. Portraits, saints and mythological figures lend themselves more readily to a vertical composition. To create a cohesive arrangement, pair works by region, season or iconographic subject.

For the poster option, the print is offered on 140 g paper with HD rendering at 150 DPI. Dimensions, canvas and framing options vary according to the artwork, format and destination; the product page displays the variants actually available.
