This collection brings together reproductions of works by Gustave Courbet (1819–1877), a major figure in French Realism. Landscapes of Ornans and the Loue Valley, springs, caves, the cliffs of Étretat, waves, animals, scenes of contemporary life, portraits, nudes and still lifes reveal the breadth of his painting.

Gustave Courbet and the Realist Break

Born in Ornans in the Doubs, Courbet moved to Paris in 1839 to devote himself to painting. At the Louvre and the Musée du Luxembourg, he studied, among others, the old Italian, Flemish and Spanish masters. His Realism does not consist of mechanically copying what is visible: he gives the people, places and activities of his time a presence previously reserved for historical or mythological subjects.

The great scenes of Ornans played a decisive role in this break. Courbet worked the paint with a visible brushstroke and also used a palette knife, particularly suited to rocks, foam, undergrowth and ground.

Ornans and the Loue Valley

Ornans and the landscapes of the Doubs form a central territory. The Ornans Valley brings together limestone reliefs, vegetation and habitation. The Château d’Ornans, Hautepierre Rock, cliffs and streams allow the same region to be explored from several viewpoints.

Courbet knew these places intimately, between the family farm at Flagey and the Loue Valley. The compositions often favour a horizon enclosed by the terrain, a rocky mass or undergrowth that brings the viewer physically closer to the landscape.

Springs, Caves and Waterfalls

The resurgence of the Loue inspired a series of paintings. The Source of the Loue places the cave’s dark opening opposite the water flowing from it. The Source of the Lison, the Blue Spring and Sarrazine Cave extend this exploration of geological sites.

Waterfalls, spillways and waterways make it possible to compare different movements of water. Broad areas of rock give weight to the composition, while lighter areas mark the foam and reflections.

Puits Noir, Streams and Forest Undergrowth

The Puits Noirs Stream belongs to a group of tightly framed forest landscapes. Trees, rocks and water occupy almost the entire picture, sometimes with only a small opening onto the sky.

Hidden Stream, Shaded Stream, Cliffs of the Loue and Puits Noirs Valley form a coherent series. These works suit interiors seeking deep greens, browns and woodland atmospheres.

Étretat, Trouville and the Normandy Coast

Courbet painted the Normandy coast during several stays between 1859 and 1869. Étretat offered him cliffs, arches, beaches and stranded boats. The Cliffs of Étretat after the Storm combines the stability of the rock with the changing sky and sea.

Trouville, Deauville and the Black Rocks broaden this maritime geography. Low tide, beaches, cliffs beneath the snow and boats produce horizontal compositions in which the coastline guides the eye.

Waves, Storms and Calm Seas

The Wave concentrates the power of a sea lifted beneath a heavy sky. Courbet repeated this motif while varying the shape of the wave, the density of the clouds, the light and the possible presence of the shore.

Stormy Sea, The Waterspout, Gust of Wind and Autumn Sea contrast with Calm Sea and marine sunsets. A gallery organised by the state of the sea particularly highlights this diversity.

Animals, Hunting and Winter Landscapes

Deer, roe deer, dogs, foxes, hares, cows and horses occupy an important part of the catalogue. Deer Running in the Snow combines animal movement with a winter landscape.

Hunting scenes are not limited to action. They also observe rest, flight, snow, woodland and the relationship between the animal and its surroundings. They can be grouped with Jura landscapes for a natural-toned interior.

Realistic Scenes and Contemporary Life

The Grain Sifters depicts an everyday activity without idealising it. Breton Spinner, Siesta During the Haymaking Season, Young Girls from the Village and Young Ladies on the Banks of the Seine show figures absorbed in work, rest or a stroll.

Courbet gives these subjects a scale and material density that contribute to his realist project. In a mural composition, these scenes introduce human presence among landscapes and animals.

Portraits and Self-Portraits

Courbet painted his family, friends, patrons, artists and his own image. Self-Portrait with a Black Dog brings together the artist’s identity, landscape and animal. The Wounded Man and Self-Portrait of the Cellist create other depictions of the self.

Jo, the Beautiful Irishwoman, Alphonse Promayet, Madame Auguste Cuoq and the dancer Louis Gueymard demonstrate the variety of his sitters. Vertical portraits create a focal point and can balance very horizontal landscapes.

Bathing Figures and Nudes

Courbet treated the nude by moving it away from mythological conventions. The Source depicts a figure seen from behind in a rocky, aquatic setting. Woman in the Waves, Young Bather, Reclining Nude and Bathers in the Forest develop other relationships between the body and the landscape.

These works have a strong presence; their orientation, scale and exhibition space should be considered before choosing the format.

Still Lifes, Flowers and Fruit

Apples, pears, pomegranates, peaches, grapes, asters and bouquets form a more intimate group. Still Life with Apples emphasises volume, texture and colour relationships.

Still lifes can be displayed in a kitchen or dining room, but can also accompany a portrait or landscape. Floral compositions bring a lighter palette to a collection dominated by rocks and forests.

Switzerland, Lake Geneva and the Final Years

Courbet chose exile in Switzerland in 1873 and remained there until his death in 1877 in La Tour-de-Peilz. Lake Geneva, Chillon Castle, Vevey, Lausanne and the Saillon gorges appear in works from this period.

The shores of Lake Geneva extend his interest in water while replacing the marine horizon with mountains and architecture. These landscapes naturally pair with scenes from Ornans or seascapes, depending on their dominant colours.

Choosing a Courbet Reproduction

Cliffs, seas, valleys and woodland often favour a horizontal format. Portraits, self-portraits and figures are generally vertical. Check the artwork’s orientation and the dimensions offered on the product page before choosing.

For the poster option, the print is produced on 140 g paper with an HD finish at 150 DPI. Dimensions, canvas and framing options vary according to the artwork, format and destination. The product page displays only the variants that are actually available.
