This collection brings together reproductions of paintings connected with Denmark, from court painting to landscapes and scenes of modern life. Royal Portraits and History Painting

The first groups are connected with the monarchy and political history. Queen Anne when she was Princess of Denmark, painted by Willem Wissing, belongs to the tradition of court portraiture. Nicolai Abildgaard’s compositions, meanwhile, address historical and dynastic episodes, such as Frederick II Building Kronborg Castle.

These images do not all serve the same purpose: official portrait, historical evocation, preparatory study or allegorical representation. When choosing, examine the title and product page rather than treating the collection as a single style.

The Danish Golden Age of Painting

The early and mid-19th century hold a central place in the history of Danish art. The Statens Museum for Kunst highlights the influence of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. His teaching shaped the period known as the Danish Golden Age or the Copenhagen School.

The Russian fleet at anchor near Helsingør illustrates his interest in the sea and precise observation. Around this generation, Martinus Rørbye, Christen Købke and P. C. Skovgaard developed views of cities, countryside and coasts. Købke’s view from Dosseringen towards Nørrebro and Rørbye’s road in the hills of Tolne show two ways of studying the landscape.

Landscapes, Coasts and Regions of Denmark

The catalogue spans Jutland, Funen, Zealand, Bornholm and several islands. Subjects include heathland, fields, roads, cliffs, ports, mills, churches and castles. P. C. Skovgaard’s north coast of Zealand at Dronningmølle opens the composition onto the shoreline, while L. A. Ring’s summer landscape at Baldersbrønde focuses on the countryside.

These works do not all correspond to an image of a cold or monochrome North. The seasons, regions and generations produce very different palettes: summer greens, heather, sea skies, snow, twilight light or harvest colours.

Skagen and Artists of Modern Life

At the end of the 19th century, the Skagen artists’ colony brought Danish and foreign painters together around the fishing village in northern Jutland. The Skagens Museum recalls the importance of this milieu for Anna Ancher and P. S. Krøyer. Anna Ancher developed a personal approach to colour and light, while Krøyer combined plein-air painting, figures and coastal atmospheres.

Anna Ancher Returning from the Field, painted by Michael Ancher, is connected to this community. The collection also includes works by Peter Hansen, a painter associated with the Funen Painters group, as well as compositions by L. A. Ring that set rural traditions against the transformations of modern life.

Vilhelm Hammershøi: Landscapes, Portraits and Silence

Vilhelm Hammershøi is now particularly known for his sparsely furnished interiors, portraits and restrained palette. The Hirschsprung Collection identifies three major categories in his work: interiors, landscapes and portraits. The Lejre Landscape featured in this selection showcases his landscape work.

The greys, browns, whites and blacks associated with Hammershøi suit understated interiors, but they do not sum up the whole of Danish painting. They can be paired with a luminous coastline or a more colourful portrait to create a contrasting arrangement.

Choosing a Danish Reproduction

For a narrow room, choose a vertical portrait or an isolated architectural subject. A horizontal landscape works well above a piece of furniture, while a seascape gives a wall more breathing room. Several works can be grouped by period, region, artist or palette.
